Cocopeat isn't just for commercial farms — it's an excellent growing medium for home gardeners too. Whether you're growing herbs on your balcony or vegetables in your backyard, cocopeat can help your plants thrive. Here's how to get started.
Step 1: Preparing Cocopeat from a Compressed Block
If you purchased a compressed cocopeat block, place it in a large container and add warm water. A 5kg block typically needs about 20-25 liters of water. Let it soak for 15-20 minutes, then break it apart with your hands until it's fluffy and even. One block will give you roughly 60-75 liters of ready-to-use cocopeat.
Step 2: Mixing Your Growing Medium
Pure cocopeat works well on its own, but for best results, mix it with other materials:
- For potted plants: 60% cocopeat + 30% compost + 10% perlite
- For vegetables: 50% cocopeat + 30% compost + 20% garden soil
- For seed starting: 70% cocopeat + 30% perlite (keeps it light and airy)
Step 3: Planting
Fill your pots or garden beds with the cocopeat mix. Water thoroughly until the medium is evenly moist. Plant your seeds or seedlings as you normally would. Cocopeat's excellent water retention means you'll water less frequently than with regular soil.
Step 4: Watering Tips
Cocopeat holds moisture well, so check before watering — stick your finger 2cm into the medium. If it feels moist, wait another day. Overwatering is the most common mistake with cocopeat. In Malaysia's humid climate, potted plants in cocopeat may only need watering every 2-3 days.
Step 5: Fertilizing
Cocopeat is low in nutrients, so you'll need to add fertilizer. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer every 1-2 weeks during the growing season. Organic options like compost tea or fish emulsion work great with cocopeat.
Best Plants for Cocopeat in Malaysia
